The Creation Myth

M. came back to class to tell me her piece was a big hit at the New Year's Eve party.  All of Grass Valley was abuzz about the dancer who turned up. The drummers had her dancing all night. She even performed to tape, several of the dances I made for her and the Rising Stars. Great feeling to know my work lives beyond me and gives the dancers something to share with others.
Great to see other students. Happy New Year to all.
Began a new sequence from Rising Stars opening dance for 2008 season. They had talked about wanting to explore Tribal Style. I found the perfect music.  It fits in with the Sword Dance and the Tribal Priestess that has been so popular at shows this last few months. That piece is my new signature piece. There's something magical about it. I found this music years ago and never knew what to do with it. Listening this time, I could see what the music was all about. It is an archetypal dance, people are spellbound, whole audiences become intensely silent, meditative, then burst out in wild applause and continue clapping and even shouting. D. calls it a Creation Myth. And so it is! These dancers all learned the choreography in no time flat, as if they had done it before and were just picking it up again from a past life.
