Sensational Santorini

Yes folks, Santorini is as wonderful as you imagine. Once a single landmass, an enormous volcanic explosion blew it apart, leaving four separate islands. We tendered ashore. There are only four ways to get from the landing stage up to the top of a steep cliff where the towns perch along the rim that is left of the crater. You can take the traditional way up on the back of a donkey (25 minutes), or walk the same path being careful where you step (40 minutes if you’re in good shape). Or, a cable car can whisk you through the air to the top in 5 minutes. We take the fourth way up, on buses that navigate the sharp switchback road.
You probably have the same images of Santorini as I have—photos of the small town of Oia at the north end of the island. The stark white buildings with the arches and blue roofs hanging from the side of the cliffs, the narrow cobblestone walkways, the cats basking in the sun, cafes looking out over the sparkling turquoise crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea. Yes, I did feel like I was in a postcard and I wish you the good luck to visit this island that was once named Kalliste (the most beautiful one).
